Senior AI Engineer – Architecture & Platform (m/w/d)

As a digital company, data-driven processes have been at the core of our operations from the very beginning. Our automated systems generate a large volume of data every day, which is analyzed by our central Data & Analytics unit and used for intelligent applications. The data sources for a digital insurance company are more diverse than in almost any other industry—ranging from customer chats and claims histories to sales and financial metrics.
Our Artificial Intelligence team is the newest division within Data & Analytics—and has quickly demonstrated what’s possible with AI: Solutions such as automated email routing, intelligent document processing, and semi-automated chat support are already making a noticeable difference for our business units. Now we’re looking forward to expanding our team to make even more possible.

Your Focus: Implementing AI Use Cases
Your main focus will be on the direct implementation of AI use cases:

• You’ll develop (generative) AI solutions from the initial idea through to production—including automated deployment. Your Goal: Optimizing processes and user experiences, e.g., through personalized customer interactions or by supporting our service agents in handling chats
• You’ll develop and implement reliable validation and testing procedures to ensure the generalizability and reliability of AI models
• You’ll continuously monitor and optimize the deployed models in terms of performance and efficiency
• During implementation, you’ll work closely with product management, our full-stack engineers, and business units to seamlessly integrate AI solutions into our systems

Growing Responsibility: Solution Architecture & Platform
In addition, you’ll take on responsibility for the technical development of our AI platform—as you get to know the team and the systems:

• You’ll design the technical solution architecture for new AI use cases, identify critical dependencies early on, and validate technical assumptions—before implementation begins
• You’ll provide technical guidance to the team and serve as a sounding board to discuss how we can meaningfully further develop our AI platform
• You’ll help us establish technical standards, best practices, and reusable patterns—in a pragmatic way that suits the size of the team

• Technology Scouting: You’ll analyze new AI trends and technologies and evaluate their potential for ottonova to drive targeted innovation
• Knowledge sharing: You’ll ensure the success and effective use of the implemented AI solutions through documentation and knowledge-sharing sessions, and serve as a technical sparring partner for the team

Your profile is based on a degree in Computer Science or a related technical, mathematical, or scientific field

• 5+ years of experience in developing and deploying AI/ML solutions in enterprise environments, with a strong portfolio of successful use cases
• In-depth knowledge of generative AI (LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, vector databases, embeddings) as well as traditional machine learning
• Cloud & MLOps expertise: Experience with cloud-based ML services (e.g., model hosting, serverless compute) and common MLOps tools (e.g., Docker, CI/CD pipelines). Experience with AWS is a major plus (Bedrock, Lambda, Fargate, EKS)
• Architectural intuition honed through experience: You have not only implemented technical solutions for AI products but also helped design them—and you know what matters most for scalable, maintainable AI systems
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to quickly familiarize yourself with business processes and the perspectives of various stakeholders, understand their requirements, and derive technical concepts from them that you can communicate clearly and precisely—to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Languages: Fluent in German (at least B2) and English

 
Plus points, not required—if you don’t have experience in these areas yet, you can gain it with us:

• In-depth knowledge of platform engineering & MLOps: Experience building or further developing ML/GenAI platforms, e.g., using managed ML platforms (AWS SageMaker), container orchestration (EKS, Kubernetes/Kubeflow), or a hybrid approach
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform)
• Experience in the insurance or FinTech industry
